Along the River During the Qingming Festival
Along the River During the Qingming Festival, the earliest known version is made by Zhang Zeduan, a Northern Song Dynasty painter. The original painting is 528cm long and 24.8cm high. It is now in the Palace Museum in Beijing. It depicts the prosperous and lively scenery and beautiful natural of Bianliang city, captain of the northern Song Dynasty (now Kaifeng City, Henan Province). The paintings are mainly divided into two parts, one is the rural area and the other is the market. There are about 814 people in the painting, more than 60 animals, 28 ships, more than 30 buildings, 20 cars, 8 cars, more than 170 trees.
It has always been believed that the Along the River During the Qingming Festival is a genre painting. However, some experts announced that it may be an exhortation to the emperor, asking for attention for city management issue. There are several conflicting plots in the picture: a team riding the sedan chair and a team riding horses met on the bridge, and the bridge is stuffed with small stalls on both sides, thus, people are blocked and cannot pass.
