With the popularity of the web, internet marketing is an efficient way for artists to attract attention on their work, and it is more convenient and more costs effective. Although artists can promote their works offline such as holding exhibitions and collaborating with galleries, there are still several limitations such as cost and space. On the contrary, internet marketing is more flexible because it is not restricted by time and region.
Social media is the key to online marketing. Everyone has access to the social media platforms which gives this type of marketing unimaginable potential. Unlike traditional ways, artists can receive comments and likes when they upload and share their artwork on social media such as Instagram or Twitter. Artists can interact directly with others who are interested in their works. Receiving feedback, such as comments from people who have different backgrounds gives artists an opportunity to get to know the world’s impression on their work and the current trends. In a recent survey conducted by the Freyrchain team, we concluded that some artists appreciate people’s comments and advice and it’s good to know what topic to follow in their next work.
With artworks getting more exposure on social media platforms and the web, some challenges arises to artists’ attention. One of those challenges is copyright protection. Artworks that are uploaded publicly on the internet is vulnerable to some speculators and copycats. Many artists said they protect their works with simple watermarks, but watermarks are often placed in the corners in case they affect the work’s whole layout. With all kinds of photo manipulation tools, a watermark can easily be taken out and erased, thus artwork can still be copied or stolen.
The blockchain technology is a new solution for this problem. It’s known as a distributed ledger and its revolutionary characteristics includes: decentralization, transparency and tamper-proof.
But how can this new technology address the copyright problem?
Once the work is uploaded on the chain, timestamps and unique IDs will be generated by the blockchain technology and members accessing the file can’t manipulate any of the data. The works and related data are all open on the chain to the public, which can ensure members that these tamper proved data can be strong evidence against forgeries and copyrights.
In recent years, more industries are combining the use of blockchain technology, blockchain is promising and one of the most potential game changer for the future. Copyright problem won’t be the only one it can solve. Blockchain can bring more possibilities and revolutions to not only the art industry but also the whole world.
