Shenzhen is one of the coastal cities of the open economy, here sensitive people can always recognize the trend of future development of China. This is a city famous for advanced technology, but it is also being increasingly artistic. Although Chinese contemporary artists always got their fame overseas and then developed domestic careers, such as Zhang Xiaogang, Zeng Fanzhi and Zhang Daqian, in China, through exhibitions in public museums, we can have a glance at the Chinese contemporary art.
“The Road of Avant-Garde”, contemporary art exhibition, introduced this time provides us with an opportunity to closely contact with excellent Chinese contemporary art.
The above two photos show a group of bronze statues. This work uses the image of ancient Chinese men to show the beauty of male bodies. They are physically strong, with clear lines, standing or kneeling, looking down at the ground, majestic but not offensive.
At first glance, this painting looks very ordinary. The Chinese tea culture has always been famous worldwide., hence, using a set of tea sets to highlight the Chinese-style “LOVE” is not surprising. The bold thing is that the interior elements of the teapot are Chinese traditional erotic images, which make the whole picture Implicit but also provocative.
The Walking Man is more bold, for the head of the sculpture is directly removed, making the audience’s attention all concentrate on the body to enjoy the strength and beauty of the sculpture.
Zhang Xiaogang’s oil painting of family series is a bit strange at first glance, for the images of the three characters are completely different, but their eyes are the same empty. Some art theorists interpret the theme of this group of paintings is the internal trauma of Chinese families. Besides, Zhang Xiaogang’s works are popular between collectors at home and abroad because of their internal criticism. Among them, “Blood: Big Family №3”. at the Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong in 2014, was sold at an amazing price of HK$93 million (about 79 million RMB), which made him, therefore, one of the richest Chinese artists.
The scale of this exhibition is not very large, however, the significance of it is to bring together the world-famous Chinese artists and show the flourishing development of contemporary art in China since the reform and open policy 40 years ago. The location of the exhibition, the public Nanshan Museum, also illustrate the mainstream’s recognition and support for contemporary art.
